One of the requirements for the Music class that I am enrolled in, is to write a research paper. I knew that we had African American contributors to music, but I didn't know that there were so many. Especially in the field of Classical Music. I am elated that this website exits and it has been a wonderful source, which I am including on my bibliography page, or me. Also it will allow me to share all this knowledge with my 9-year old daughter. The efforts of all those who have contributed to creating this site, for keeping it updated with pertinent information, etc., you are a God send. God bless you all and continue to be encouraged as you are an encouragement, I'm sure, to many African American children who didn't know.

Dubbed the "Black Patti" - a dubiously flattering allusion to Italian-American prima donna Adelina Patti - the Virginia-born Jones, daughter of an ex-slave, performed before four U.S. presidents, was showered with jewels from heads of state and wealthy admirers, and even drew so many fans at one concert in New Jersey that 1,000 had to be turned away. Vaguely remembered today - and, at best, a footnote in opera annals - Jones mesmerized critics and audiences alike. Following a concert at Washington's National Theater, the Washington Post proclaimed, "Probably no voice of our time has made such an impression by its vibration, its purity and its natural flexibility." GREAT PERFORMANCES salutes Jones and numerous other African-American opera stars in "Aida's Brothers and Sisters: Black Voices in Opera," airing on PBS. This revealing and inspiring documentary also looks back on the careers of Elizabeth Taylor-Greenfield, Paul Robeson, Camille Williams, Dorothy Maynor, Marian Anderson, Leontyne Price, Jessye Norman, Simon Estes, Robert McFerrin and Kathleen Battle. For African Americans, the road to the white opera footlights has not been an easy one. Only 61 years ago, the great contralto Marian Anderson was barred from singing at Washington's Constitution Hall. According to Rosalyn M. Story, a historian who appears in "Aida's Brothers and Sisters," the first major stage inroads were made in tandem with the civil rights movement of the early 1960s. "Just as Rosa Parks anchored the movement for equality in Montgomery, Ida B. Wells Barnett fought against the evil of lynching in the South and Mary McLeod Bethune crusaded for the education of blacks, Marian Anderson and the great artists who preceded her forged a new order in a world where black voices were often ignored and at best, severely underrated," she says. "Marian Anderson and Leontyne Price are icons who presented a universe of possibilities." Story, a violinist with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and author of And So I Sing, the definitive account of African-American divas and their roots, shares observations in the telecast with a number of black opera artists. These include Betty Allen, Ann Brown, Grace Bumbry, Reri Grist, Barbara Hendricks; tenors Thomas Young and George Shirley; and countertenor Derek Lee Ragin. Also on hand are legendary German opera director Goetz Friedrich and young members of Opera Ebony.
