I am very interested in hearing comments on teachers, campuses and music dept. atmosphere........If you want you can e-mail me at germont22@hotmail.com
At the school where I attend I am the only black person in the entire school of music. The teachers don't seem to notice my color but the students are very reserved. I feel like I am a round peg trying to fit in a square box. There are times when I get so discouraged I could walk out the door and not look back but I am not in school to socialize. There is no need for me to try to fit in, I am in school for a purpose and not to be buddies with people. Although I think that a more diverse school would make me feel more comfortable, there is nothing that will stop me from pursuing my dreams, not even racism. In most colleges you will be one of the minority, unless you go to a black university. I'm not sure of the music programs at black universities but it would be a good idea to start looking there first and then look at the other schools as a last resort.
I suggest Michigan State University or the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. Another option would be to contact Mr. Gerald J. Blanchard at the University of Michigan-Flint. A Small program with excellent voice teachers. I hope this helps in your search.
Prairie View A&M University, an HBCU, has a wonderful program. I am a graduate and I was acepted into the graduate program at USC which has one of the best vocal programs in the nation. Feel free to e-mail me with any questions at sunflowertks@cheerful.com.
